George Hiraoka Cloke is a filmmaker, sound artist and environmental researcher from Kent, UK. His practice integrates notions of acoustemology, ecological awareness and seeding better futures through attentive listening and acoustic imagination.

His award-winning non-fiction short Listen Closely (2023) celebrates acoustic conservation and sonic biodiversity in Taiwan. It was created in collaboration with leading environmental researchers, and featured at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, DCEFF, Flatpack Festival and Cambodia International Film Festival.

As an electronic musician, Hiraoka Cloke’s work has been championed by BBC Radio 1, NTS, 6 Music and Spotify. Releasing on the Japanese label Flau, his music explores themes of nature and memory through live instrumentation, samples and pastoral field recordings. His debut record was declared one of “The Best Spring Albums of All Time” by music imprint A Closer Listen.

His speculative soundscape Earth Is All Melody (2023) was created for the “Futures of Listening” exhibition at Asia Culture Center, South Korea. In collaboration with environmental activists, disability rights campaigners, K- Pop musicians and urban planners, the project envisions the soundscape of a fictional ecological utopia. Celebrating community, accessibility, and sustainability, the soundscape was visually enhanced through Korean Sign Language interpretation.

As an PhD researcher, he was awarded a CHASE Research Scholarship in 2022, focusing on ecological representations of riverscapes in Asian cinema.
